Stormwater – Polluting Our Waterways
Stormwater is water from rain or melting snow that does not soak into the ground. It flows from rooftops, over paved areas and bare soil, and through sloped lawns. As it flows, this stormwater runoff collects and transports the following pollutants: sediment, pet waste, pesticides, fertilizer, automobile fluids (oil, grease, gasoline, antifreeze), deicing products (road salt and fertilizers), grass clippings, leaves, and other yard waste, cigarette butts and other litter. Town of Canton Stormwater Management Plan and Ordinance
The Town of Canton will develop, implement, enforce, evaluate and report to the North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality (NCDEQ) Division of Energy, Minerals and Land Resources (DEMLR) in order to comply with the MS4 Permit number NCS000476, as issued by NCDEQ. This permit covers activities associated with the discharge of stormwater from the MS4 as owned and operated by the Town of Canton and located within the corporate limits of the Town of Canton.
